Jimmy Possum

Tasmania, 2023

Principles of Critical Regionalism were honed in this conceptual living room design for a Tasmanian property.

The architectural design responds to the site topography, where the orientation amplifies the waterfront view while considering heating and lighting impacts on the functionality of the space. The glass doors allow heat and sunlight to enter from the east, and open up to an outdoor dining space which is landscaped in Tasmanian sandstone and local native grass plants. A raised fireplace hearth bench extends along the western wall as a multi-use design feature.

Referencing construction methods that are culturally linked to this area, form and line applications are inspired by the ‘Jimmy Possum’ Chair; a historical Tasmanian chair design. Regional considerations are applied through the selection of contemporary clean lines, natural materials, neutral textures, raw metal and open lighting, with local materiality at the forefront of the design.
